Geo Jams at Foo Camp

At lot of new spatial service ideas were exchanged among geo types at Foo Camp, a hackers offsite hosted by Tim O'Reilly and his associates in the orchard behind their offices in Sebastapol, California. The event  was amazing for many reasons,and completely organized by attendees on site.

Aside from lots or random brainstorming, Geotypes gathered in two sessions:

First a highly interactive white board architectural jam, which I facilitated, and therefore have no real notes. Rich Gibson  may also have taken notes(?)  We discussed grass roots geo apps in progress, geocoding address schemes, spatial search semantics, location sensing networks, and ended up drilling down, discussing embedding  WFS, (Web Feature Server) encoded layers within an RDF description. Dan Greening talked briefly about the OMA ( Open Mobility Alliance) then Johsua Schacter showed his gps maps of new york as a preview of his nyc.lopedia, and briefly described a new RESTful service extension to geourl.   Anselm Hook talked about Thingster a wish-fulfillment engine, a community web service based on on precise geographical location, and showed his 3D globe map of the blogosphere. showed of a bit of Mikel Maron's  worldKit . Anslem reminds me that Jason Harlan showed of his widely regarded, cool blogmapper, And then Dirk-Willem van Gulik, president of the Apache server foundation  gave us a tour through the underpinnings of maps he develped with asemantics.com. (Dirk is also a contributor to the WMS specification)

Later the next day Anselm Hook  hosted a highly interactive session on location based games. Anselm collected names of participants, and asked me to blog the event. So here is  a linear transcription of  the converation thread which evolved too fast for much further exposition right now :

Technology basis for location games:

- Java J2ME runs on all platforms.
- Anselm showed a Java screen saver on his Nokia Phone
- AT&T aready offers POI  Point of Interest services (probably based on InfoUsa data)
- Trust is an important part of game dynamic
- Brew OS can query location, if offered by a carrier
- Offering Location is a carrier policy
- Special devices create fragmented audiences
- Verizon is offers already -assisted gps -  location information for a price
- Nextel provides cellphone location for business to manage vehicle fleets

Ideas for Location games

- Stalking suggest some good game ideas
- Carriers worried about stalkers ( a topic known among telco committees as the the 'stalker.com' problem)
- Flash mobs also offer possibilites
- ' A former CIA guy' had game idea:  Tier one countrys like iraq covered by intelligence analysis., but  Tier 3 counties like Somalia could be set up as game target to acquire game info (intelligence)
- Fort Irwin California is the national simulation laboratory for military location games
- There's a book on military simulation games
-  Social Games primitives:
- capture the flag
- scavenger hunts
- geocaching
- Segmentation essential Success will depend on audiences, eg. Ispy for kids, airport game for a bored air traveler
- What about acquisition games - like mobile Pokemon card trading
- Game designs for adolescent girls - who like sms ( simple message services)
- Game as an event based on 'flash mobs
- Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy  Bowfinger film  as a stalker game
- Educational scavening hut for kids like Apple Tucson Sabino canyon event
- What about a 'paint ball' like  game  witha gps camera. You 'die' if you are photographed.
- Game destinations: to go to the library for clues. go to a restaurant...
- Super waves in stadiums
- Rock concert sms for sound requests
- Games as a real learning events - for learning things, empowering
- Wayback historical time machine location games
Create a future in place
- Virtual objects become real - real game objects- mailed by player to himself
- Game objects - high value like - harry potter, star wars collectibles
- How about an game palyers end  real object editing kit e.g. for ' a swords, and shields'
- For stalking games, Players must sign up agreeing to volunteer to be suprised by a game event.
- Location games marry physical excitement of outdor sports with fantasy from computer games

The group then retired to the lawn outdoors for a raucus  test of
Dan Egnor's GPS enabled 'Tron' game  hack.  ( Dan is the lead developer of  Google Labs location search)
